Living abroad, far from your country always brings new changes and challenges for your life! I had lived in many countries before I moved to Budapest but no matter how experienced you are in moving countries, you will always experience some kind of ‘culture shock’. Adapting to a foreign culture can be very stressful, even if you’ve visited the country before.
I had never been in Hungary before I settled down here in the summer of 2012, so you can imagine how many months it took me to feel comfortable in my new surroundings. Many things were very different from my home country, and I had to learn how things get done in Budapest. A new place is always full of exciting new food, but buying the usual Caribbean ingredients can be a real challenge.
One thing I was sure of: I didn’t want to stop cooking those tastes and memories that I get used to since my childhood. I had to make some efforts in order to find the perfect ingredients achieving the authentic Caribbean flavor of the dishes. My free time was filled with exploration of new markets and food stores.
